Summary

Program Aides On-Call are generalists responsible for providing educational, relational, and social experiences for infants, toddlers, and/or preschool-aged children to foster growth and development across all developmental domains. This position reports to the Education and Inclusion Manager or Center Director and may require travel to various program sites and/or home visits.

You may be assigned to different classrooms, centers, bus routes, cafeterias, or kitchens as necessary for program operations. Additionally, you will assist with daily classroom management and other duties, and may be assigned to various classrooms or centers as needed.

As frontline representatives of Save the Children, Program Aides must ensure the safety and security of children and families they contact, adhering to the organization's core values: Accountability, Ambition, Collaboration, Creativity, and Integrity.

Given the routine contact with children, the position emphasizes preventing child abuse through awareness, good practices, and training. It involves taking positive steps to protect children, reporting concerns, responding to abuse instances, and promoting child-safeguarding training and awareness.

What You'll Be Doing (Essential Duties)

  1. Applying clear practices and procedures daily.
  2. Managing time effectively and organizing work.
  3. Keeping the manager informed of important issues.
  4. Building effective relationships with colleagues, children, and families.
  5. Understanding and executing oral and written instructions.
  6. Assisting classroom staff with activities and covering for absent teachers.

Janitorial Assistance

  1. Providing custodial support, including cleaning and minor repairs.
  2. Serving as custodian during absences.

Kitchen Assistance

  1. Completing routine food service chores.
  2. Preparing and serving food, including for children with special needs.
  3. Assisting with clean-up, inventory, and substitutions as needed.
  4. Ensuring hygiene and sanitation standards are met.

Other Duties

  1. Potentially serving as a Bus Monitor.
  2. Attending workshops, meetings, and activities.
  3. Gaining knowledge of Head Start standards and regulations.
  4. Promoting Head Start positively in the community.
  5. Maintaining confidentiality of children, families, and staff information.
  6. Adhering to organizational policies and procedures.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Must be at least 18 years old.
  2. High school diploma or G.E.D. required.
  3. Certification as per applicable Head Start or child care regulations.
  4. Within 90 days of employment, obtain and maintain basic first aid and pediatric CPR certification.
  5. Knowledge of working with infants, toddlers, and preschool children.
  6. Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  7. Ability to relate sensitively with children and communicate effectively with staff and families.
  8. Ability to follow directions and take initiative.
  9. Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  10. Ability to work with children with disabilities.

Physical requirements include exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and performing activities like sitting, crawling, stooping, and lifting. Must pass background checks and health requirements. Valid driver's license required if operating a vehicle.

Preference given to current or former Head Start/Early Head Start parents who are qualified.
