Aircraft Mechanic I (CH-47/NDI II)

The Aircraft Mechanic I (CH-47/NDI II) performs maintenance on helicopters, excluding repair of systems according to drawings, blueprints, directives, technical manuals and safety procedures. Inspects aerospace weapon systems components and support equipment for structural integrity using nondestructive inspection methods and performs fluid analysis.

Responsibilities include:

  • Removes and installs aircraft subsystem assemblies such as engines, rotors, gearboxes, transmissions, mechanical flight controls and their components.
  • Services and lubricates aircraft and subsystems.
  • Prepares aircraft for inspections and maintenance checks.
  • Performs scheduled inspections and assists in performing special inspections.
  • Performs limited maintenance operational checks and assists in diagnosing and troubleshooting aircraft subsystems using special tools and equipment as required.
  • Uses and performs operator maintenance on tools, special tools and aircraft ground support equipment.
  • Prepares forms and records related to aircraft maintenance.
  • Removes and disassembles defective parts of the aircraft.
  • Maintains the supplies and performs preventive maintenance.
  • Performs additional duties including maintenance duties, as requested.
  • Adheres to company policies and safety programs.
  • Processes parts and performs equipment standardization and carries out any necessary preparation of parts before or after inspection.
  • Follows written instructions in the techniques/methods for which certified.
  • Receives guidance or supervision from a Level III in that method when necessary.
  • Sets up and standardizes equipment, conducts tests, interprets and evaluates for acceptance or rejection, and documents.
  • Is familiar with the scope and limitations of the technique/method in which they are certified.
  • Provides the necessary guidance and supervision to trainers and Level I personnel in the technique/method in which they are certified.
  • Is familiar with the codes, standards, and other contractual documents that control the method as utilized by the employer.
  • Develops written instructions from approved general procedures.
  • Determines test method and prepares fluids and parts for nondestructive inspection.
  • Interprets nondestructive inspection test results and provides information about defects to repair center.
  • Analyzes wear metal content reports on engine lubricating oil and other fluids and recommends corrective action.
  • Establishes radiation areas for radiographic operations.
  • Computers and monitors personal exposure areas for radiographic operations, and monitors personnel exposure data.
  • Performs nondestructive inspection on structures, components, and systems.
  • Detects flaws such as cracks, delamination, voids, processing defects, and heat damage using penetrant, eddy current, magnetic particles, radiographic, optical, and ultrasonic test equipment.
  • Determines metallurgical information of components according to alloy, temper, conductivity, and associated factors.
  • Operates, maintains, and inspects nondestructive equipment.
  • Performs operator maintenance and service inspections on shop equipment and tools.
  • Ensures lock out and tag out procedures are accomplished prior to maintenance on equipment.
  • Performs silver recovery functions.
  • Handles and disposes of hazardous waste and materials.

Minimum Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
  • U.S. military technical school or specialized training course is desired; certification of education level is required.
  • Valid up-to-date A&P license (optional)
  • Shall have three years aviation maintenance experience, two years rotary wing aircraft experience, and two years on the assigned Mission Design Series (MDS). All experience must be within the six most recent years.
  • Must be trained and qualified per NAS 410 or ASNT-CP-189 to the level assigned.
  • Previous experience in the maintenance, modification, and repair of tactical aircraft systems of the type being serviced and their associated components.
  • Completion of an initial Non-Destructive Inspection Level II training course and current basic qualifications.
  • Three (3) or more years' experience as an aviation inspector.
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • Must provide own tools/toolbox. Recruiters will provide toolbox requirements to candidates upon selection.

Clearance Requirements:

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a NACI(T1) Public Trust Security Clearance. Must be able to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization. US Citizenship is required for facility credentials/authorization to work at this facility.

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Thorough knowledge of aircraft systems on the assigned MDS.
  • Basic knowledge of aircraft unique tools such as test equipment, torque wrenches, dial indicators, micrometers, hydraulic press machine, and those listed in the assigned MDS Maintenance Allocation Chart (MAC).
  • Working knowledge of technical publications and Logistics Information Systems.
  • Able to prioritize workloads to maintain schedules on assigned projects.
  • Possess the level of experience to inspect all required aeronautical type maintenance to be performed by aircraft mechanic.
  • The incumbent receives technical guidance, as required, from supervisor or higher-level technician, will occasionally be required to lead teams through more complex aircraft relevant tasks, and may be required to make entries in aircraft logs and records.

Physical Requirements/Working Environment:

  • Must be able to walk and stand on level and/or inclined surfaces for extended periods throughout the day.
  • Must be able to climb stairs, ramps, ladders, and work stands.
  • Must be able to crouch, crawl, grasp or handle objects, use finger dexterity, bend elbow/knee and reach above/below shoulders.
  • May be required to lift/push/pull heavy objects whose weight may exceed 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to type using a standard keyboard to communicate through e-mail and various software applications.
  • Will handle dirty parts and lubricants.
  • Will be required to wear proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Must be able to pass a Respirator Physical and Fit Test qualification.
  • May be required to operate power vehicles, machinery, hand tools, ground support equipment, forklift, etc.
  • May work in maintenance shop or outside.
  • Must be able to work in a shop where the environment is drafty, noisy, and dirty.
  • May be exposed to extreme noise from operating equipment.
  • May be exposed to electrical shock hazards or work near moving mechanical parts or vehicles.
  • May be expected to work in austere environments and all-weather conditions.
