Description
This position prepares finished products for shipment or storage by placing them in shipping containers, the specific operations performed being dependent upon the type, size, and number of units to be packed, the type of container employed, and method of shipment. Work requires the placing of items in shipping containers, and may involve one or more of the following: knowledge of various items of stock in order to verify content, selection of appropriate type and size of container, inserting enclosures in container; using excelsior or other material to prevent breakage or damage, closing and sealing container, and applying labels or entering identifying data on container. Will be required to operate a forklift.
Excludes packers who also make wooden boxes or crates.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Examine shipment contents and compare with records such as manifests, invoices, or orders to verify accuracy.
- Record shipment data, such as weight, charges, space availability, damages, or discrepancies for reporting, accounting, or recordkeeping purposes.
- Prepare documents, such as work orders, bills of lading, or shipping orders, to route materials.
- Confer or correspond with establishment with representatives to rectify problems, such as damages, shortages, or nonconformance to specifications.
- Pack, seal, label or affix postage to prepare materials for shipping, using hand tools, power tools, or postage meter.
- Contact carrier representatives to make arrangements or to issue instructions for shipping and delivery of materials.
- Deliver or route materials to departments using hand truck, conveyor, or sorting bins.
- Requisition and store shipping materials and supplies to maintain inventory of stock.
- Determine shipping methods, routes, or rates for materials to be shipped.
- Computer amounts, such as space available, shipping, storage, or demurrage charges, using computer or price list.
- Compare shipping routes or methods to determine which have the least environmental impact.
- Use of forklift.
SKILLS & ABILITIES:
Education: High School Graduate or General Education Degree (GED): Required; DoD Technical School
Experience: One (1) year warehouse experience; General Clerk I, General Clerk II, Grounds Maintenance Laborer, Laborer, Order Clerk II, Shipping Receiving Clerk; Stock Clerk
Computer Skills: Basic computer skills, word processing, spreadsheets, 10-key/calculator
Certifications & Licenses: Upon hire, FAA will provide a training course in forklift operations.
Other Requirements: Other additional duties as assigned by Management.
Other Physical Requirements: Ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) - steel-toed shoes, gloves, hearing protection, splash guard apron, safety glasses/goggles, face shield, rubber apron.
Work Environment: work will be conducted in an industrial area.
